iPhone OS, Google Android and Windows 7 Phone Series might be stealing most headlines in the mobile os space but that doesn’t mean that Palm’s WebOS is not on par with its competition. This is largely due to the fact that Palm WebOS handsets are pretty much operator-exclusives and offered only on Palm’s own products. Jen Edwards at BrightHand takes the latest update for a spin to find out what’s new. Palm Pre Follow-up Revealed

Loving the look of the Palm Pre but fearing it may prove too rich for your blood? Look what just revealed itself… Yep, we have the second Palm handset to be based upon its stupendously exciting WebOS operating system. Codenamed the ‘Palm EOS’, what we have is a lovely tweak on the established Palm Treo/Centro design with a candybar Qwerty layout and some rather tasty specs.

Perhaps most noticeable are the dimensions which at just 111 x 55 x 10.6mm make the EOS the slimmest Qwerty smartphone to date (usurping the lovely Nokia E71). On top of this you’ll get a 2.63in 320 x 480 capacitive display (yum), HSDPA, WiFi, aGPS, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and EDR and 4GB storage plus a microSD expansion slot (note: omitted on the Pre). The 1150mAh battery is also apparently capable an impressive four hours 3G talk time.

One downer is the 2MP camera which lacks autofocus but does at least pack in a flash and video recording capabilities. On the upside however is decent codec support for WAV, MP3, AAC, AAC+, MPEG4, H.264, H.263 and in there. That said, perhaps the best bit is yet to come: price. Reports claim the EOS will retail for just $349 sim free (£235) which could make it the must have budget smartphone of 2009.
