Motorola DROID first hands-on!

Motorola DROID first hands-on!

Some quick observations on the phone:

  • That big screen is killer. Bright, crisp, and tons of room for your icons and widgets.
  • Speed is noticeably improved — particularly when moving from app to app. We did notice that some of the home screen scrolling looked laggy.
  • Android 2.0 is definitely cleaned up — but it’s most definitely still Android
  • The browser seems significantly improved — pages now load up in a fully zoomed-out mode, and the load times and scrolling are way snappier.
  • The keyboard takes some getting used to, and it suffers from a similar hand-position issue as the G1, but it’s fairly usable. We think it’ll be second nature once we spend some time with it.
  • Facebook is integrated into accounts, which means some of that BLUR functionality is here (though now it’s part of Android 2.0 natively). The good news is that when you add a Facebook account you can choose to pull all Facebook info and contacts, or just info related to your existing contacts — a real clutter buster.

Lenovo teases new ThinkCentre all-in-one desktop

Lenovo teases new ThinkCentre all-in-one desktop

Lenovo isn’t offering any more than this picture of its new ThinkCentre all-in-one desktop just yet, but it’s already clear that it’s not messing around with this one. How can we be so sure? It has a map of the world on it, and maps mean business. It also doesn’t look like we have to wait too long to get the full story on it, as Lenovo is promising to make things official at the EDUCAUSE 09 conference early next month.

Google adds free turn-by-turn navigation to Android 2.0

Google adds free turn-by-turn navigation to Android 2.0

Those nat service providers’ fears were actually quite justified. Google today unveiled Maps Navigation (beta, of course), an extremely upgraded version of its current Maps software that’ll be free and, from what we understand, available by default on all Android 2.0 devices. All the usual Maps features are present, including the ability to search by name of business and have it suggest the closest matches, both semantically and geographically, and traffic data. We’re also now looking at turn-by-turn navigation, female robotic voice and all, and integration with satellite and street view, the latter of which will be able to show you what lane you need to be in when exiting the highway, for example. Instead of just searching nearby, it’ll also now search along the route for when you’re looking for upcoming gas stations or fast food joints that won’t take you too far off your beaten path. Select addresses can be added to the Android home screen as their own icons, and given the limits of living in the cloud, trips and their respective visual feeds will be cached just in case you hit dead spots along the way. Still no multitouch, but as VP of Engineering Vic Gundotra noted at a press conference, there’s nothing stopping a company like HTC from adding that feature à la Sense UI.

Dell’s Latitude XT2 XFR rugged tablet gets official

Dell’s Latitude XT2 XFR rugged tablet gets official

As is often the case, the FCC spoiled the surprise on this one, but Dell’s keeping its PR machine chugging along with its new Latitude XT2 XFR rugged tablet nonetheless, and it’s fleshed out a few details in the precess. As expected, this one is more or less just a rugged version of the company’s existing Latitude XT2, including the same 12.1-inch multitouch display, a modestly upgraded Core 2 Duo SU9600 processor, up to 5GB of RAM, your choice of a standard hard drive or SSD, a range of hot-swappable modules (soon to include GPS) and, somewhat curiously, no Windows 7 option — just Vista or the ever popular XP downgrade. Of course it’s the ruggedness that’s the real selling point, and this one looks to deliver the goods on that front (for a starting price of $3,599) — just check out the video after the break.

It’s been a long haul since it was first announced way back in May, but Activision’s DJ Hero is now finally available in North America, and will be making the trip across the pond on October 30th. That includes both the standard $120 version, and the premium Renegade Edition, which runs a full $200 and includes an upgraded turntable, a hardshell carrying case that converts to a DJ stand, and a Jay-Z and Eminem two-CD set — and the game, of course. Anyone have any brief first impressions? Let us know in comments.

Got an N97? Yeah? Reckoned that Nokia has forgotten about your loyalty and moved all of its focus onto the N900? Fret not, dearest early adopter — the engineers in Espoo are making good on a promise to clear out lots of bugs in the aforesaid handset with firmware 2.0, and if we’re seeing this right, it’s available now to download all over the world. We know, you 5800 owners are clamoring for the same type of TLC, but for now it looks like the pricier sibling is getting its due. Hit the read link and get your download going, and make sure to report back on your kinetic scrolling experience, cool?

The Pentax K-x is a new mid-range digital SLR that combines the compact body and simple operation of the entry-level K-m camera with some of the advanced features of the prosumer K-7 model. The 12.4 megapixel Pentax Kx offers an uncluttered design that is particularly well-suited to compact camera owners looking to make the step-up to a DSLR whilst featuring the same 11-point wide-frame AF system with 9 cross sensors and 2 line sensors as the K-7. Samsung Moment review

Samsung Moment review

In the world of Android, it’s not yet clear who’s going to come out victorious — QWERTY sliders or their keyboardless brethren — but does there really need to be a winner? We say there’s room for just about everyone in this open-source party, and Sprint is starting to round out its Android offerings by introducing the keyboard-equipped Samsung Moment to saddle up alongside the HTC Hero that was released a few weeks ago. In the scheme of things, the platform is still extraordinarily young which means that virtually every new handset that’s announced brings firsts to the table; in the Moment’s case, it’s both the first Android device with an 800MHz ARM11 core and the first Android QWERTY phone with an AMOLED display (you’d have to go back to another Sammy, the Galaxy, to find the first AMOLED Android phone regardless of input method).

Being able to stuff Android, AMOLED, QWERTY, and 800MHz all into one sentence certainly sounds like a winning combination, but does the Moment deliver? Let’s find out.

eviGroup’s Pad is a 10-inch 3G tablet with personality

eviGroup’s Pad is a 10-inch 3G tablet with personality

Time to freshen up the old netbook market with a dash of Windows 7, a pinch of touchscreen functionality, and a generous helping of… Seline10? eviGroup, the crew responsible for the attractive 5-inch Wallet MID, has announced the 10.2-inch Pad, whose pièce de résistance is the Seline10 artificial intelligence software that’s been in development for a decade, if you can believe it. Its purpose is to act as your secretary / assistant, and while the novelty’s good, we all know how well Clippy worked out. Fret not though, it’s just an optional extra and shouldn’t detract from the appeal of a device that offers 3G and a/b/g WiFi connectivity, one VGA and three USB ports, multicard reader, webcam, microphone, and the old faithful 1.6GHz of Atom power. A price of under €500 is being touted, with further details set to emerge over the coming days.

iPhone 3GS coming to Orange UK on November 10

iPhone 3GS coming to Orange UK on November 10
Posted in Mobile Phone News, Mobile Phones
Thursday, 29 October 2009 by Rok Krznar

So you’ve been lusting after that spit-shined touchy-swipey device from Apple, huh? If you’re in the UK, come November 10 you’ll finally have a choice of iPhone provider (both for 3G and 3GS flavors), with The Guardian confirming the date as Orange’s launch of the coveted handset. O2’s exclusivity runs out on the ninth of that month, but we shouldn’t be too quick to rejoice, as Orange will seek to add value rather than undercut O2’s pricing. Independent retailers Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U are also expected to stock the iPhone on behalf of Orange, and lest we forget Vodafone will be joining in with its own offering in early 2010. The CEO of 3 has also indicated a strong desire to bring Cupertino’s baby onboard, though that’s unlikely to happen before the midpoint of next year. So it’ll get cheaper, just very… very slowly.
